Once again, facility-based work programs are being threatened on both a federal and state level.
We need families from all states to stand with us and tell your story about the importance of employment opportunities for those who are unable to successfully work at a competitive level and/or in a competitive setting. Your loved ones deserve the right to choose to work at their own ability level in the setting that works best for them at a fair wage that is commensurate with minimum wage standards.
The “Coalition for the Preservation of Employment Choice, Inc.” is a 501 (c)(4) non-profit corporation, developed by a group of families and providers to continue to preserve choice for adults with I/DD.
The mission of this organization is to advocate, educate, and promote efforts that provide individuals with significant disabilities a voice for their personal vocational and employment choice. The vision of the Coalition is to engage and educate federal and state politicians and their staffers, public funders, and the public on the importance of the preservation of employment choice for people with significant disabilities, utilizing educational programming, research activities, marketing, fund drive campaigns, and other communication tools.
Like our Constitution, Section 14C of the Fair Labor Standards Act has stood the test of time; allowing flexibility for specialized work centers and other employers to train and pay qualified workers based on their individual level of productivity. These programs are highly regulated, requiring frequent evaluations and ongoing opportunities for competitive employment for anyone who chooses and benefits from that option.
Currently, there are numerous funding and legislative threats to eliminate this choice. The loss to individuals and families who have found these support services to be the best fit for them will be devastating, as it already is in states where these options no longer exist. With thousands of people across the nation on waiting lists to get into these programs, it makes no sense to eliminate them.
The Board of Directors is reaching out to prospective family, provider, and/or association members that are passionate about our cause and willing to bring their voice, skills, and knowledge to join our Board or become active members of the Coalition. We have contracted with a strong lobbying firm to continue to represent us in Washington. But we need help to continue to represent the voices that are not being heard.
Please consider joining us in helping to educate legislators and families. We must come together collectively to STOP these efforts!
